5 New Year’s Resolutions for small business owners

5 New Year’s Resolutions for small business owners

As we approach January 1st, many people will be planning New Year’s Resolutions. The most common challenges are to diet, get more exercise, or cut down on unhealthy habits. All of these can have a really positive effect on your life and result in more energy and enthusiasm to get the new year started.

As a busy small business owner, you might also want to consider some simple changes that could make your life easier or your business more profitable. Here are our top 5 ideas based on discussions we had with customers in 2014:

1 – Organise emails and to-do list better

One of the most common things we hear from business owners is that they are so busy that it can take a long time to get things done. When you are responsible for every aspect of the business this is understandable and many people have this problem. Try to think about ways to make small improvements to effeciency and you will find that these add up and can save a lot of time. For example, try replying to all emails as soon as you read them. This will get a small job done whilst it is fresh in your mind, and it won’t just join your long list of pending work. Another idea is to make sure that you keep a to-do list and complete at least one item on the list every day.

2 – Learn more about new technology

Technology is moving so fast these days that there are constantly new innovations in software and hardware that could really help with your business. Whether it is a new online accounting system, or an iPhone diary app, there is so much out there that it is definitely worth spending a few hours keeping up to date with the latest developments.

3 – Finish on time

This may seem counter-intuitive when you are very busy, but studies have found that business owners who are able to finish on time and switch off in the evening often feel that this increases their overall performance levels. When you feel refreshed and happy you are more likely to work with enthusiasm and getting this work-life balance right can make all the difference.

4 – Make time for research

In order to anticipate and plan for changes in your market, it is important to follow industry news and keep an eye on what your competitors are doing. Again, this can be hard when you have so many other priorities, but in the long-term if you are able to predict and react quickly to changes or opportunities it could be time very well spent.

5 – Refresh your website design

Another job that is hard to move up the to-do list is updating or refreshing your company website. If it seems to be ticking along fine it may not matter that the design is not as cutting-edge as it was 3 years ago. It can be tempting to adopt this view, but it is also important to remember that the internet is a very fast-moving world and new features and design styles are introduced every year. It is important that your customers feel that you are up-to-date and understand modern technology, so a small face-lift can have a big impact.
