The Welsh Triangle

During the 1970s, Broad Haven became quite famous because of a fairly long list of UFO sightings happening in the beautiful spot in Wales. The location became so mysterious and interesting to the public eye, that it was even called “Broad Haven Triangle”, after the Bermuda Triangle, following an article of “The Sun”, called “Spaceman Mystery of the Terror Triangle”.

But what happened in this mysterious location? In February 1977, 14 schoolchildren reported seeing a UFO craft in a field behind their school and immediately sharing what they had experienced with their teacher. The latter didn’t believe them – who could blame him, after all, kids do have a lot of fantasy up their sleeves- and carried on with lectures as if nothing had happened. Coming out of school, the children apparently saw the mysterious spaceship once more. At home, they kept insisting on their version of the story, and once again, their experience was dismissed by adults, who just would not take them seriously. They kept insisting with friends, family, and basically everyone they knew, until the next day they decided to hand in a petition to the police, asking for the incident to be properly investigated.

After all this fuss, the headmaster couldn’t just ignore the events anymore, therefore decided to take this whole UFO gossip as a more serious matter and deal with it himself. To end it as quickly and pain-free as possible, he grouped the kids and asked them to draw what they had seen on the previous day. He didn’t expect what happened, though: the kids’ drawings were all very similar to one another, proving that, in fact, something had happened. – We recommend you actually check the pictures of the drawings, which are available online: it is very interesting to see them first-hand, and it is fascinating to see how many similarities you can find among them! –

But what did these drawings depict? A saucer-shaped UFO topped with a dome.

This was the first of many more sightings happening all over Wales, and in particular, in the area around Broad Haven, it was in fact after this event that people started claiming to have had encounters with UFOs or other weird paranormal experiences.

Another very curious sightings of the area happened to the Coombs family, employed at the Ripperston farm, who claimed to have had a lot of very bizarre experiences, as UFOs sightings from their vehicle, a 7ft silver suited being with a black visor who visited them from outside of their home, repeated mechanical disturbances such as their car or television which stopped working and had to be replaced multiple times. Finally, our favourite one: their cows were teleported from one field to the other, almost as if these paranormal beings were pranking them!

Another one of these famous sightings happened around the Haven Fort Hotel, in Little Haven. One night, as many others, Mrs Rose Granville, the owner of the property, claim to have seen a UFO outside her window. From inside the spaceship, weird humanoids wearing white boiler suits came out and walked around her property gathering something she couldn’t identify.

She described the spaceship as an upside-down saucer, which she also thought looked like jelly. She also recollected feeling a very high and sudden heat on her face, once standing at the window, trying to understand what was happening and who were the strangers in her backyard. She reported, in fact, feeling that her face was burning.

As for the spaceship, flames of all colours and lights were coming out of the technological masterpiece: something you don’t really see every day. Mrs Granville, with incredible courage and full of curiosity, screamed at them “Hey! What are you doing here?”, when, horrified, noticed that they had no faces.

Once discovered the weird aliens, the owner of the hotel went all around her hotel, trying to get some of the guests and to show them what was going on. By the time she came back with them, the aliens were gone.

The day after, she then went where she had seen the spaceship, and claims that two inches of ground were burned precisely on that spot.

Shocked by the sighting, Mrs Granville wrote a letter to her MP, who asked the Ministry of Defence to investigate the event. Mrs Granville was afterwards visited by an RAF officer who asked her to describe to him her story, and after hearing her version, completely dismissed it as lies and fabrications.

Apparently, the officer examined the landing site and could not find evidence of a landing, then proceeded to claim that if a UFO should have arrived at RAF Brawdy, they would have charged normal landing fees and informed Mrs Granville immediately. Pretty snarky, right?

Sceptics think that this whole set of phenomena is to be associated with hoaxers, and this belief particularly spread after people started recognizing the silver suits the aliens were using as those used in a refinery just nearby. As most of us at this point know really well, whenever there is consistent presumed alien sighting activity, there is also soon talking about hoaxers, and as of today, some people actually came through and admitted that they were responsible for most of the cases that took place in the Welsh triangle.

Despite this, there isn’t yet a satisfying explanation for all the occurrences, which remain some of the strangest and most famous inexplicable supernatural events in British history.

After all the infamous events, in fact, animals were seen cowering and ghost figures appeared from windows of old farmhouses: the whole place seemed to have become the stage of several strange events.

Last year, the events were celebrated because of their 40-year anniversary, and with the occasion, a new piece of the story came together. An explosive and unheard-of novel detailed a declassified MoD document that shows that top-ranking officials of the time carried out a covert inquiry into the sightings that took place in Wales in 1977.

The book “The Watchers”, by Neil Spring, is supposedly based on true events, and the author claims his intention to share the truth with the general public. To him, the most interesting connection that needs to be highlighted is the fact that all these events happened along the coastline in Pembrokeshire National Park, near a Royal Airforce Base. Coincidence? He doesn’t think so.

The author’s research has been based on the National Archives over thirty years after the events and is also the result of new witnesses coming forward with unprecedentedly heard stories and experiences.

Even if, at the time, it seemed like MoD officials were not slightly interested in the events, the author found a letter from the head of the MoD’s S4 wing to the Provost & Security Service, the RAF’s internal police force.

Apparently, the S4 chief wrote in this letter “I have not even told the Minister I am consulting you” and asked for a discreet enquiry, after having heard an increasing number of witnesses reporting paranormal activity of some kind.

The author, Mr Spring, also claimed that the new witness testimony had rocked the foundation of the British Government, and that “I visited Broad Haven a sceptic, and came away convinced that some of the locals knew far more about the mysterious occurrences of 1977 than they are willing to reveal.” It is still difficult, though, to understand the reason for this secrecy. Who are they protecting and why? What really happened that we can’t get to know?

Finally, a few years ago a new explanation was added to the already many existing ones: a former US Navy Sailor admitted that the silver-suited men were military personal wearing fireproof uniforms, while the UFOs were new harriers. MoD did not care to comment on the subject.

UFOs are no joke, even if some people like to prank defenceless citizens by wearing silver suits and elaborate costumes. It seems, though, that in this case there might be something more to it, something that was lurking in the dark and that affected a whole community of unaware common people.

And what happens when the Government simply won’t take it seriously? Many of those witnesses, as the kids mentioned in the article, are still releasing interviews and passing on their witnesses, talking about the consequences of their experience in very human terms: harassment, hatred and bullying.

They have continued on their path and mission to prove everybody wrong and to give themselves and the world a satisfactory explanation about the events that happened in those years.

We still haven’t got to that point, but we urge you to not give up: what went on in the infamous Welsh Triangle? Share with us your best theories and thoughts!
